Johnny McGowan’s 50th Birthday Show at The White Horse

Two of my favorite guitarists share a birthday, Junior Kimbrough and Johnny McGowan. I never met Junior, but I can say this about Johnny, that he is up there with the guitar greats and plays like the late Glen Campbell did, who I had the pleasure of growing up with his kids and seeing play when I started recording and playing music from the early to mid 2000s.

A star-studded cast of heroes, Bob Appel and elder statesmen, honky tonk country music legend, Alvin Crow backed Johnny McGowan’s Rugged Gents that Friday night at The White Horse and made it a banger for the packed house.

Johnny’s 50th birthday show was the highlight of the 2021 Texas Tour. I told myself that if I could make it to play at his birthday that my trip would be a huge success. It was an honor to play as a Rugged Gent on Friday’s birthday show as well as his actual birthday the Wednesday prior at the The White Horse.

You can see videos and photos of J’s birthday show on the “Media” page of my website and previous White Horse performances. Thanks and cheers! -MV
